How waves form

Waves form mainly because of wind. When wind blows across the surface of the water, it transfers energy to the water. This energy makes the water move and form waves.

The stronger the wind and the longer it blows, the bigger the waves become. Wind pushes the water forward, but gravity pulls it back down.

This up-and-down movement creates the shape of a wave.

Waves can also form because of storms, earthquakes, or underwater movements. These waves are usually much stronger and can travel long distances.

So, waves form when wind or movement transfers energy to water and makes it move in a regular pattern.
