Amino Acids

Atoms are the basic building blocks of all matter. Everything in the world — including the human body — is made of atoms.

ATOMS

Atoms
Atoms and their structure

Proteins, amino acids, cells, tissues, and organs are all built from atoms. Atoms are extremely small — much smaller than anything we can see.

Each atom consists of three main parts:

1. Protons
Protons have a positive charge.

2. Neutrons
Neutrons have no charge.

3. Electrons
Electrons have a negative charge and move around the nucleus.

The nucleus is in the center of the atom and contains protons and neutrons. Electrons move around the nucleus and take part in chemical reactions.

Different atoms form different substances.

Examples:
• oxygen atoms help us breathe
• carbon atoms form the base of all living things
• hydrogen atoms are part of water and energy processes

Atoms join together to form molecules. Without atoms, no substances, cells, or living organisms could exist.

Atoms are the link between the physical world and living matter.
